The U.S. Air Force Soars Into the Cloud

The United States Air Force is looking to supplement its work in the actual clouds with work in the technological cloud.

According to a recent Microsoft post, the USAF and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) are in the process of executing one of the largest commercial contracts in the history of the Department of Defense: “having instant access to secure email and unified capabilities that enable real-time conversations can make all the difference when it comes to responding to threats at a moment’s notice or nimbly managing service-wide logistics.” Over 100,000 seats of a version of Microsoft Office 365 are due to be delivered to the Air Force through its Collaboration Pathfinder program.

These governmental agencies will be making use of programs and services already available to other organizations, such as secure email, Skype for Business, and Office Web Applications. This migration initiative represents a gesture of confidence on behalf of the Department of Defense—confidence already shared by many other large and small public and private organizations worldwide.
