For the past couple of years, workplace AI has mostly looked like this: You ask it a question, and it gives you an answer. Ask it to summarize a document, draft an email or analyze some numbers, and it does its best.
Microsoft’s new Copilot Cowork takes that idea quite a bit further.
Instead of simply helping you figure out what needs to be done, Cowork is designed to actually do the work—including complex, multi-step jobs involving different applications, files and data sources. Think less “helpful chatbot” and more “digital coworker you can hand an assignment to.”
And yes, like hiring a new human coworker, it comes with a cost.
So What Exactly Is Copilot Cowork?
Microsoft calls Cowork an “agentic system.” In normal-human language, that means you can give it an outcome rather than walking it through every individual step. So instead of asking Copilot to summarize several documents, analyze a spreadsheet and then draft a report, you could give Cowork the entire assignment. It can plan the steps, gather information from Microsoft 365, use different AI models and tools, perform actions and produce the finished result.
It can even handle longer-running jobs in the cloud, so the work can continue after you close your laptop.
Or go get coffee. Or go home. We won’t judge.
This Is Where AI Starts Doing the Work
Traditional Copilot is primarily something you work with. Cowork is something you can increasingly hand work to. For example, you might ask it to review project documents, Teams conversations and meeting notes, identify anything behind schedule, create a management summary and draft follow-up messages.
That’s not one AI prompt. It’s a miniature workflow.
Cowork uses Microsoft’s Work IQ to understand organizational context across email, files, meetings and people. It can also use tools and take actions, which is what makes this different from simply asking Copilot to make your PowerPoint slides prettier.
Now About Those Copilot Credits…
Here’s the part organizations need to understand before turning Cowork loose.
Cowork is not simply unlimited usage included with your Microsoft 365 Copilot license. A qualifying Copilot license is required, but Cowork uses Copilot Credits, Microsoft’s usage-based currency for AI services.
With pay-as-you-go pricing, one Copilot Credit currently costs $0.01. Organizations can also pre-purchase credits annually, with volume discounts available.
How many credits an assignment consumes depends on what Cowork has to do—the AI models it uses, how much organizational information it retrieves, the tools and actions involved, and how long the job runs. In other words, a quick assignment should cost less than a complicated job involving multiple data sources, tools and deliverables.
Keeping the AI Expense Account Under Control
Fortunately, Microsoft isn’t expecting organizations to simply hand Cowork the corporate credit card and hope for the best. Administrators can control who receives access, establish spending limits, set usage alerts and monitor consumption. Users can also type “/cost” inside Cowork to see approximately how many credits a task consumed and how much of their assigned allowance remains.
Cowork is off by default, so organizations can start small. A controlled pilot with a few employees and several clearly defined use cases makes sense: measure how many credits are consumed, how much time is saved and whether the results justify the expense. That’s much more useful than turning it on for everyone and waiting to see what happens.
Security Matters Even More
Cowork operates within Microsoft 365’s existing security and compliance environment and respects existing permissions and sensitivity labels. But that also makes good Microsoft 365 housekeeping increasingly important. If employees already have access to SharePoint sites, Teams content or files they shouldn’t really be able to see, an AI agent can make those old permission problems much easier to uncover—and potentially more consequential.
Before giving AI more autonomy, organizations should understand what information users can access, make sure sensitive data is properly protected and establish clear rules around what AI agents are allowed to do.
Agentic AI makes governance more important, not less.
The Bigger Story Is Where Copilot Is Going
Cowork is another sign that Microsoft’s AI strategy is moving beyond “Copilot helps you write things.” The next stage is AI that does things.
That could be especially useful for smaller organizations and nonprofits, where employees routinely wear several hats. An AI agent that can handle research, reporting, coordination and repetitive administrative work could free people to spend more time on work requiring human judgment and expertise.
But it also changes the conversation around cost, security and governance. Organizations need to understand who can use these agents, what information they can reach, what actions they can take—and how many Copilot Credits they’re burning through along the way.
Apparently, AI no longer just wants to help with your job: Now it wants an assignment.
